Hello,
Just received my FreeNAS Mini-XL. I bought the no-drives version, and I'm installing 4 drives in there for now.
My question: it seems obvious to put the 4 drives in slots 0-3, but do I have to? Is the smart thing to do? What about temperatures?

Thank you.

It does not matter which slots you put them in. For heat, I would use every other slot. If you decide to add another 4 drive vdev, you can pull those drives out and put them in slots 0-3. FreeNAS and ZFS do not care where your drives are, and they can change from boot to boot.

It is a good idea to put the last four digits of the drive serial number on the outside of the drive tray. It makes identifying a drive for removal much simpler.

For example: 20171005_210057.jpg

I don't know why that came out upside down...
