Does a zvol take up space for unused space?

I have created mutiple zvols. For simplicity say each are 500gb. Does this immediately take up 1,500gb in my pool regardless of spaced used within the zvol itself?

Also, does a pool snapshot backup the zvol as well?

No. Unless you reserve it.

You can snapshot zvols, obviously. Be careful when snapshotting at higher levels, because the snapshot has to be recursive to include datasets and zvols underneath the dataset in question.
