No, as iXSystems goes to great lengths for each chassis they sell to make that work. Taking random hardware and trying to compensate for all variations would be costly, for hardware that they don't even sell. Or have available for testing.

That said, perhaps we can have a somewhat better scheme. Maybe a dedicated column with location information a user can type in. Then allow automatic sorting of that column.

The classic solution to this issue is to label the front of a drive tray with the serial number of the drive inside. This isn't as nice as a graphical "idiot light" style GUI display, but eliminates a whole lot of mostly meaningless complexity by moving the responsibility from code and arcane bits of hardware interaction to a sysadmin's eyeballs. It's just a different way to reach the same end result.

Yes, that should be done too.
