Hi

I had a problem with one of my disks in mt HP Proliant N54L FreeNAS server. WD replaced the disk under warranty but only a couple of weeks later the same disk has reported errors (see attached screen grab)

Is this another disk fault or is there a way (like checkdsk in Windows) to run an in machine diagnostic from FreeNAS?

Thanks

Cliff

Hi SweetAndLow

Thanks for the pointer. I already had smart test set to run on each disk a couple of times a month

I tried SSH into my ReadyNAS and running smartctrl on each of my disks. In each case it reports the selftest as passed.

However when I login to the FreeNAS GUI I get a red alert warning with the error above (CRITICAL: Device: /dev/ada0, 3 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors), however the volume is marked as healthy in Storage. I can get the green alert light back by unticking the alarm but this clearly doesn't sort the problem

Am I missing something?

The pool is ok thanks to ZFS and parity. But you still have a drive on the edge of failing. Only 3 pending sectors isn't critical, but if the the value increases again then you should replace the drive (see the procedure in the manual). I recommend to order a drive now if you don't already have spare one on a shelf ;)
