Disc Space Issue

I've been using FreeNas for a few years & it's been great! Over time I have added more and more files & I would like to clean it up, but when I delete items from my windows share the free space stays the same. I have seen other threads reference the export recycle bin option. Mine is unchecked. Any help is appreciated!
