destroy all partitions on a disk

Is there a simple way to destroy all partition's on a disk.
If i now do a wipe disk, i get a'n error 'Error: Unable to GPT format the disk'

i don't know how to fix this. at first i could create a UFS volume, but i wan't to destroy this and start over. but the system don't let me wipe the disk.

i'm on the latest freenas.

Not really. In the bootup process FreeNAS takes the conservative approach of protecting disks that have partitions on them. The easiest answer is to use another OS (linux live CD, whatever) and destroy all the partitions on the disk and then boot FreeNAS again.

The "easiest answer" I gave above is the recommendation we've been giving because the only way I know to circumvent the protection is a bit hacky. There's room for things to go wrong doing it that way which is why I don't publicize it to the world. It also takes about the same amount of work as making a linux live CD or putting the disks in your desktop.
