Desktop plugin?

Looking for a Plugin that provides a desktop environment... Any suggestions?

Are you referring to a GUI-based file manager that runs on the server? (The feature request was "accepted", but it's not likely to happen soon, as it's a large project in of itself.)

Otherwise, you can look into Nextcloud, which is essentially like your own private cloud suite.

Just want a GUI (with a web browser and access to the local file system) that I can use when I remote in from outside the house

No, there is no such plugin. I'd say it's highly unlikely there ever will be, but forever is a long time.
