I wasn't sure which sub-forum would be the best so I guessed and put it here. We have a customer that is using a different brand of NAS but it's old and needs to be replaced. However, they have 14 external USB drives so that they can keep 14 days of data removed from the NAS itself. These are 8TB drives. These are stored in a fire-proof safe. They aren't so worried about the building burning but are concerned about robbery. They are in a line of business where this is a possibility. These drives ensure they have plenty of copies to go back to.
In addition, they have 2 weekend backups that run and are rotated. These are kept completely offsite.
In my experience, USB isn't good to use for this purpose and I understand the reasons why. It is my job to propose a better solution for them.
The data backed up each night is composed of VM images along with Macrium images for individual file recovery.
Would anyone be willing to make some suggestions on how best to use TrueNAS for this to achieve a similar level of backup without using USB? I had considered eSATA but don't know how this will work. We also considered leaving the old NAS in place to handle the USB side and make TrueNAS the new NAS. it would then back up to the old NAS.
I appreciate any suggestions that anyone could provide.
