Degraded Pool with Faulted Disk

It was about time I had my first "problem" with TrueNAS after a couple of years of being a happy user.

I got this email alert:

New alerts:
* Pool tank state is DEGRADED: One or more devices are faulted in response to
persistent errors. Sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue
functioning in a degraded state.
The following devices are not healthy:

* Disk WDC WD30EFRX-68EUZN0 WD-WMC4N0J6V7SK is FAULTED

after receiving this a few days ago:
* Pool tank state is ONLINE: One or more devices has experienced an
unrecoverable error. An attempt was made to correct the error. Applications
are unaffected.

I ran a long SMART test following the HDD troubleshooting guide, and this was the result:
smartctl 7.2 2021-09-14 r5236 [FreeBSD 13.1-RELEASE-p7 amd64] (local build)

errors: No known data errors

I recently (3 months ago) upgraded mobo, CPU and RAM but kept everything else.
My next step will be to replace the SATA cable and scrub the pool again.
If the problem persist, I will replace the drive.

Posting here more as a sounding board. This is the first time this happens to me, so I wanted to make sure I'm on the right course of action.

Should I consider something else?

Thanks!
R.

zpool clear tank should bring the drive back into the pool.

Check power and data cables to see if they are correctly inserted on both ends. Just keep it under check and run a scrub to play safe.

Do you have a scrub schedule? Was either email you got related to one?

If you want to try a harder approach, take out the drive and run badblocks on it: if there are unreadable sectors it will mark them; or it might kill the drive, but it's unlikely.

Yes, both emails were alerts after a regular schedule task. I believe they are 10 days apart.

That's typical SMR behaviour, but you are using Red Plus (CMR drives), aren't you?

Inspect those connections, it's either those or the drive itself.

Yes, WD30EFRX is CMR.
I will change the data cable today and run another scrub to see if that solves the problem.

I changed the SATA cable, cleared the errors in the pool, and re-scrubbed and all seems to be fine.
No errors after the scrub ran, but I will keep an eye on it for now.
If I receive another error on the same HHD, I will replace it.
