Degraded Drive - No Errors

Hello Everyone,

My Pool consisting of a 8tb drive is degraded, the UI is giving me this error code:

"Pool Archive_Old state is DEGRADED: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. An attempt was made to correct the error. Applications are unaffected.
The following devices are not healthy:

  • Disk ST8000VN004-2M2101 WKD3NPJM is DEGRADED"

On Friday, when this error first showed up, I had 18 write errors, now after running a smart test, the disk doesn't show any errors, is however still degraded.

What is my best course of action here?
I'm very new to true NAS and incredible inexperienced.

Do I just replace the drive? It is well within warranty, or is it fine?

Some screenshots are attached, if they are of any help.

Thanks for your help ahead of time!

We don't yet see sufficient information to decide if the disk is really bad (although it doesn't look hopeful at this point).

run smartctl -a /dev/sda (and see if the extended offline/long test is complete)... re-run it after a few hours if not (or watch the status in the disk SMART details in the GUI).

Thanks for the advice, I am currently running a long test, so when it is done, I will return with the results

Hope you are happy losing that data as you have no resiliancy in that pool. (Mind you the name seems to imply it may not be critical data)

Please use code tabs when inserting data like that - its easier to read

Lastly, please read the forum rules - the ones about posting your hardware setup - its an important part of us being able to help you.

Wait till the smart test fails or suceeds and then post the results please

Hello,

Thanks for your response,

The data on the drive is unimportant, as I am in the process of migrating to the server, so the data is stored on a separate storage system I am upgrading from.

Thank you for the advice on the forum rules, I am running

  • MSI B660M-A Pro Motherboard
  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-10100 CPU @ 3.60GHz 4 cores (8 threads)
  • 8gb DDR4 RAM
  • 2 HDDs, 1 NVMe SSD all in raid z (data redundancy added later on)
No hard disk controllers or network interfaces besides the ones included on the MOBO

At least one CRC error points to a cabling problem at some point...
2 HDDs, 1 NVMe SSD all in raid z (data redundancy added later on)
It's absolutely not clear what this means... RAIDZ1 needs at least 3 drives. Did you mean a 2 or 3 drive Mirror? (equivalent, or sort of, to RAID1)

zpool status -v should remove any lack of clarity for us.

Sorry I misspoke, it's a raid0 array (stripe) as I'm migrating data from one server to my new one, I don't have the spare HDD's in my pool yet.

Code:
    NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
    Archive_Old DEGRADED 0 0 0
      a04423d1-540e-4ec9-a0f0-f0d2c7743a1a DEGRADED 0 0 0 too many errors

the zpool status reads:

here is my script output:

You realise (you must) that you have absolutely no resiliancy in any of your pools?

No chksum errors, but Archive_Old - and its single disk is suspect.
The drive is a bit warm

Have you run zpool clear? (to be clear - please don't)

As @NugentS said, you're playing with fire.

Three different pools, and each pool is comprised of a single drive.

2 HDDs, 1 NVMe SSD all in raid z (data redundancy added later on)

There is no mirror nor RAID-Z involved in your ZFS pools. There is no redundancy whatsoever. (According to your .txt output of "zpool -v")

Like I said already, Im in the process of moving data to the drives, meaning it is stored offsite. No, I haven't done zpool clear and I most likely won't as I have made use of my warranty and have started the replacment process.

Thank you all for your help!
