q1) why the ufs in the Filesystem path?

/dev/ufs/FreeNASs1a 926M 654M 198M 77% /
/dev/ufs/FreeNASs4 19M 750k 17M 4% /data

q2) are the 2 paths above, re data and parity ?

The system USB slices (partitions) are UFS and are mounted via their glabels. FreeNASs1a (the root file system, mounted read only) contains the FreeNAS "firmware". FreeNASs4 (/data) is writable and contains the FreeNAS config database, reporting data (so that it persists reboots) and some other things (geli encryption keys, ...).

so FreeNASs1a is the OS on the CF card, ok I understood that to be read only

the /data is also on the CF card (?) - makes sense, but it was a detail I had not recognised previously

so there are 2 partitions on the CF card, one read only (OS) and one writable for the 'housekeeping' information
