Hi,

just got an email from FreeNAS saying CRITICAL:

Device: /dev/ada1, Read SMART Error Log Failed
Device: /dev/ada1, failed to read SMART Attribute Data

ada1 is a Intel SSD DC S3500. It was simply forgotten in the scheduled SMART self tests but doesn't show any errors none the less? Or am I missing something?

Any ideas what this errors above means and where the problem is?

Code:
[root@nas] ~# smartctl -a /dev/ada1

Ok. Last night multiple more errors occurred on device ada0, ada1, ada2.

This was not important data but SSDs for small server processes which could easily be replaced from backups. tank0 was not affected apart from his L2ARC drive.

Code:
Device: /dev/ada1, unable to open device
The volume tank1 (ZFS) state is ONLINE: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data corruption. Applications may be affected.
Device: /dev/ada1, Read SMART Error Log Failed
The volume tank0 (ZFS) state is DEGRADED: One or more devices could not be opened. Sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue functioning in a degraded state.
Device: /dev/ada1, failed to read SMART Attribute Data
Device: /dev/ada0, unable to open device
Device: /dev/ada2, unable to open device

Code:
Device: /dev/ada1, unable to open device
The volume tank1 (ZFS) state is UNAVAIL: One or more devices are faulted in response to IO failures.
Device: /dev/ada1, Read SMART Error Log Failed
The volume tank0 (ZFS) state is DEGRADED: One or more devices could not be opened. Sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue functioning in a degraded state.

This makes me think it is the SATA controller. ada0, ada1, ada2 reside on the same external controller (Marvell 88SE9230).

And I also got mail from freenas saying:
Code:
ahcich1: Timeout on slot 27 port 0
ahcich1: is 00000000 cs 08000000 ss 00000000 rs 08000000 tfd 50 serr 00000000 cmd 10009b17
ahcich1: Timeout on slot 22 port 0
ahcich1: is 00000000 cs 00400000 ss 00000000 rs 00400000 tfd 50 serr 00000000 cmd 10009617

when looking at /var/run/dmesg.boot
Code:
ahci0: <Marvell 88SE9230 AHCI SATA controller> port 0x4050-0x4057,0x4040-0x4043,0x4030-0x4037,0x4020-0x4023,0x4000-0x401f mem 0xc1310000-0xc13107ff irq 17 at device 0.0 on pci2
ahci0: AHCI v1.20 with 8 6Gbps ports, Port Multiplier not supported
ahci0: quirks=0x900<NOBSYRES,ALTSIG>
ahcich0: <AHCI channel> at channel 0 on ahci0
ahcich1: <AHCI channel> at channel 1 on ahci0

EDIT:
After shutting down the system and rebooting it, the drives and controller were up and running and working without problem. A scrub on tank1 didn't reveal any data corruption but I don't trust that controller very much anymore.

This is what happens with marvel controllers and this is why most people suggest not using them. They are not very good and will cause issues.
