Hello,

This is my first post, and I wish it had been a more pleasant issue to write about.

I bought 4 new TOSHIBA N300 10TB NAS drives 21st of december 2019. The disk drives, ZFS and my FreeNAS system has run excellent until now.

Two of them failed SMART test in the beginning of May with the follwing alert type:
Code:
CRITICAL
Device: /dev/da11 [SAT], Failed SMART usage Attribute: 7 Seek_Error_Rate..
Mon, 5 May 2020 06:30:32 AM (Europe/Stockholm)

I started to backup the 20+TB files. So this saturday, the computer store replaced the drives without any problem, and I started all over to create a new pool and restore my files.

But, this morning, FreeNAS again warns (critical) for two of the disk drives, one of them I bought in december and one of the replaced (and new) one I got this saturday. The disk is not even 48 hours old. I really do not know what is going on. Bad luck? 4 out of 6 drives got this error. Should I expect the last two of them to fail as well?

Anyone else got problem with Toshiba N300 NAS drives in FreeNAS?

i just want to add that today i have 2 of these drives reporting the same error. I have an array of 6 drives of various manufacturer.

Today suddenly both N300 HDWG11A drives are reporting a fail on seek error:

Hello @tulth ,
I contacted Toshiba about this issue, but they did not know anything about it. Below is a follow-up mail from a technican.

Dear Mr Metalime ,

thank you for your reply.

The seen values do not show anything unusual, also it is very unlikely that so many drive will fail due seek errors. This issue is not known to us.

Maybe the error is caused due to vibrations in the system and therefor the heads will have difficulties with positioning.
Could you please check if the system is in some way vibrating when in use.

Otherwise we can only suggest another replacement.

Best regards

There are no vibrations in my chassi. I have more than 20 drives installed and no other disk has got this problem. However, I have been running these drives since then without any other problem. They sometimes change the Seek Error Rate Status to IN_THE_PAST and sometimes to FAILING_NOW.

I'm not very happy about it.

Best regards

I am RMA'ing mine. For now they are working; got replacement drives on the way.
I have to eat the shipping on RMA though, not too happy about that.

how did it go for you? I RMA'd mine, and got another 2 failing ones (see https://www.truenas.com/community/t...6mb-cache-might-be-motherboard-failure.87605/), at this point I'm considering getting https://shop.westerndigital.com/products/internal-drives/wd-gold-sata-hdd#WD8004FRYZ (even though I already have 4 N300 8TB that are working well.
