CORE to SCALE?

I'm currently running CORE on a Dell server. I purchased another Dell R720XD server and I'm hesitant what OS to install. I currently use jails and very happy with FreeBSD based CORE, what are your thoughts of migrating to SCALE? I consider my NAS as production, I run several work related jails, as well storage for my music production.

Why are you considering it? You're happy with CORE, and you're using features that don't (and won't) exist in SCALE--so why think of changing?

I wanted to hear other people opinion, since I'm about to build a new NAS. Right now my direction is to use CORE as I have experience with it. However, I'm concerned that FreeBSD will eventually fade, hence why SCALE was created as alternative. For example, jails can be replaced with Docker containers easy. If CORE will eventually disappear, I might as well start the transition to SCALE and gain experience on it.

I should've been more verbose on first post, hope this helps.

For a home-use network, I've only identified one case so far where I feel SCALE may trump CORE. On my network, I have two Plex servers - one on CORE and the other on Win10. I would prefer not to run the latter, but it runs a DVR tuner that Plex supports. I use this for recording TV programs I'm interested in watching later. DVR tuners have limited support on CORE.

I believe SCALE will enhance the Plex experience by meeting several objectives, which are either not supported or are trickier to set up on CORE:
  1. Plex on SCALE supports a range of DVR tuners. It will allow me to merge the two Plex services I have into one.
  2. Simpler h/w transcoding (though not officially supported on Debian-based Linux according to the Plex support article Using Hardware-Accelerated Streaming).
  3. Plex on SCALE supports sonic music analysis. This is a feature that's not available for Plex on CORE.
Until there's an official SCALE release though, I'll be in no hurry to migrate Plex from CORE to SCALE,

If you consider your NAS as production this should not even be a point. Scale is beta. Beta and production don't mix.

Too many options out there now lol. :)

I run Core on top of ESXi 7 and then provide NFS shares back into ESXi for many VMs to run off of. All on a single server (and 2 JBOD enclosures). I also run Jails on Core but no VMs.

Now I have to look at Scale to see if it suites my future needs... Jesh - you guys are killing me!!

All kidding aside, love the TrueNAS team and the TrueNAS system. Been running it since 8.x (missed 0.7 but looked at it). Hope to keep running it for many more years.

Cheers,
