I think it might be better to open another thread in another category with the current design and get some suggestions there.
Good idea, maybe in the Hardware section.

As a side note, this thread is a perfect example about why it's so important to give out the full details; do not read this in any negative way, just wanted to underline the fact for future readers.

Yeah, but I also took a lot of learnings from this, which is great.
Thanks for the help already :)
That's all this forum is about, which is the thing I like the most!

2-3 editors at once on ProRes HQ is one thing, but up to 10. That's a big range to account for where you'd bottleneck.

How much total storage would you like to be able to reach? Do you have archive or near-line storage plans? At some point the power bill just gets a little crazy, unless you're a big post production facility and can eat those costs.

I’d suggest a motherboard with a lot of PCIe slots and room for a CPU with the lanes to address them all on a PCIe3.0x8 or higher basis. Whether you use them all in the end or not, the cost of the motherboard and a used CPU is pretty tiny compared to the storage drives.

Whether that’s Epyc or a LGA-3647 Intel Xeon, there are some fast, inexpensive used CPUs out there that can handle a lot of PCIe lanes for very little money. Especially if it’s a file oriented server where the core count can be kept low.

It wouldn't be 10 editors at once. It can be up to 10 users, but only max. 4 of them would be editing, at least for the midterm.

That is a good question. There will be a point where multiple systems or a cluster make more sense, but scaling one system to at least 1.5PB is the plan.

Not yet. Electricity costs are not a factor normally, but would probably look at LTO Tapes.
