Hi Guys

My Western digital NAS has packed up so I thought I would have a go at setting up my own freenas box. I have managed to recover most of my data from the NAS which I have transferred to a windows formatted external drive.

I'm fairly confident in setting up the box etc but am not sure what the best method for transferring the data from the external drive to the Freenas is. I'm I best off using FTP?

Thanks in advance.

It really doesn't matter a whole lot. FTP doesn't have its own CRC for packet corruption, and I've seen corruption from this. I just copy it via SMB share myself. Since you said "external" I assume USB. In that case, whatever you use will be very slow anyway.

Thanks for the response. I don't know of any other way to get the data onto the box I will just do it as suggested.

Thanks

How much data? I have noticed that connecting over ethernet it arount 10+ times faster than if you transfer over wifi. This applies even if you have sshd in and are moving from 1 pool to another. I don't know why. It may just be my machines. If the data is connected directly to the box via USB or possibly a spare SATA port it might be faster but I don't know if it's possible.
