controller card not recognized

i just did a new install of 8.3.1 with a 24 bay server using a adaptec asr-31205 controller card and there are no drives showing up for me. i checked and the card is on the freebsd compatibility list but i cant find a instance of someone using it for freenas. im not exactly sure what my next step should be. this is the first time freenas hasnt completely worked for me right from the start.

This is where the problem is. It seems from the first post below that the Adaptec aac driver is not well maintained and has some issues. You might see if there's a firmware update for the controller and see if that helps.

Ah, how the mighty have fallen. Years ago, the Adaptec 1542 was *the* controller card to have.

ok progress but still no drives. the card had the original firmware which was several versions outdated so i got that up to date and that kernel panic went away btu everything still seems the same.
any ideas where to go next?
