Hello all, :)
I thought I should post this tidbit of information, which could possibly help someone in my predicament.
I was adding some hard drives to my server (FreeNAS 8.2-P1).
But before doing so, I had to perform some tasks.
1) Test WD hard drives using their test utility from the UBCD-USB version.
I plugged the hard drives into the motherboard's SATA ports - not the RocketRAID HBA ports.
Test successful!
2) Next, I had to initialize them, otherwise FreeNAS wouldn't find them, using Parted Magic (aka gParted).
Initialize successful!
3) I then plugged the initialized drives into the HBA ports, and then rebooted the server into FreeNAS OS.
Trouble!!!
4) I couldn't get into the WebGUI app - message UNHANDLED EXCEPTION - What the hell? I exclaimed.
5) Rebooted the server into FreeNAS again, but this time I could log into the WebGUI app.
6) There on the System Info page was a lot of unrecognizable information - It was expecting to find something at a
certain location that was no longer there.
7) I Googled for help to no avail.
8) Out of frustration, I shutdown the server and went away for awhile.
9) Came back with a better attitude, and then powered-on the server.
10) The problem I had experienced miraculously disappeared. Hmmm!
It then occurred to me that since I was messing around with SATA ports, the DMI pool info that the BIOS passes to the OS, was probably fouled by my actions. Apparently a reboot doesn't update such info. Other than that, I couldn't think of any other reason for my problem.
The lesson learned here was to always shutdown, might even have to turn-off the power supply switch, or pull the power plug.
Regards,
Bryan
