I've got an HP Prolient DL380e Gen8 which I'm about to use as my backup device and I'm about to use a DL380 Gen9 as my main server and I have a question about network connectivity. I'll be using 10GEe direct connection between the machines but I'm also thinking of upgrading part of my network to 10GBe.

My question is can I still use the 1GB network connections from the server for things such as jails whilst using the 10GBe for general networking?

yes - but make sure you do not give the 1Gb NIC an IP address

Thanks for your reply. I've now done that and got the general networking through the 10GBe and been trying to get the jails working through the 1GB connections but can't get a connection for them.

Any tips?

Thanks, unfortunately I still have an issue with trying to set it up. The 1GB ports still have no IP assigned to them and if I try to install a new jail it fails saying pkg.FreeBSD.org couldn't be reached via DNS. If I set up a jail so it goes through the 10GBe it works but as soon as I try to run a jail through the 1GB ports the fans on my enclosure go into overdrive and the whole network goes down. To eliminate the switch I kept the 10GBe connection through my managed switch and the 1Gb ports through another managed switch and then direct wired to my router but like that the fans going into overdrive etc happened straight away.

I'm still none the wiser as to what was causing the problems but I've now fixed it and got everything working OK. I removed all of my network settings (IP addresses, default routes, DNS servers et al) and set up my 10GBe connection again.
