I'm running core (specs in thread) and plan to add a backup drive. I am open to recommendatins. I am currently looking at the options below. I am just looking for something that can do a daily back up using a 6TB HDD. I'm hoping to find somethign compatible with Core and allow max HDD transfer rates. Thoughts?

UGREEN External 3.5 USB3

SABRENT External 3.5

Any assist is much appreciated.

The Sabrent has the advantage of a cooling fan.

Performing ZFS scrubs on a disk without proper cooling may cause the drive to over-heat. And never performing scrubs on your USB attached backup disk implies you don't care about the backups...

One problem of doing daily backups to a USB attached drive always attached, is that the drive's data USB cable can become disconnected or it's power disconnected. USB is not the most reliable connection method. In fact, you almost need to write a custom script to make sure the drive is healthy / attached before starting your backup. And if it isn't attached, page you out.

I wrote a TrueNAS resource on local disk backups:
It is not intended to be plug and play for people. Just give them ideas. The resource does list other enclosures, and while I can HIGHLY recommend the Cru-dataport one, it is also quite expensive, (and physically heavy).

Good luck.

As @Arwen said: stay away from USB connectied drives. I'd get something like this any time again:

First ...

and then something like ...

Alltogether 40 bucks, at the most. Working as expected over here for more than three years with a local replication job to encrypted backup pool on an external HD ("maxing out" the drives transfer rates).
