I just put together new FreeNAS the other day the specs are:

Supermicro Avoton 8-core 2.4GHZ
16GB ECC (another 16 GB kit is on its way)
M1015 flashed to IT mode P16 firmware
10x3GB WD Red RAIDZ2
Gigabit Ethernet (desktop and NAS are connected to 5-port gigabit switch)

Writing to NAS from my windows 8 it is around 34MB/s while copying from NAS is around 27MB/s. I did enable autotune and not sure what else to look for. At one point it did start around 100MB/s for a while then dropped to 34MB/s and I can't seem to duplicate it anymore. When it hit 100MB/s I see hard drive leds flashing more frequently but when it dropped to 34MB/s the leds flash every few seconds. This is my first FreeNAS build by the way.

Any ideas?

I think I've answered my question as to why I was seeing slow write / read performance. I have a USB 3.0 hard drive connected to my desktop apparently it plays a big role in terms of write / read performance. Instead of using it, I used local hard drive and I'm getting around 96-100MB/s in some cases higher than 100MB/s for both write and read.

Also turn off auto tune. It is usually recommended to not use it.
