I struggled throughout the morning with a new install (9.2.1.1) which I had been using in the lab today. After concluding iSCSI testing I was planning to reproduce my tests using CIFs. That's when I found that the service would not start. Searching this issue on the forum and elsewhere led to plenty of clues and similar issues, but none of the bug reports and satisfied users I read about resolved my issue. It seemed that most users were dealing with a previously working install (CIFs Service) that started failing after some event or change. In my case the service never started successfully to being with. There were a lot of references to deleting files and symlinks which didn't even exist on my system. I understand now that my regular building/rebuilding of pools is what lead to my problem.

After a bunch of reading and searching I became familiar with the "system data set" concept.

Go to: system >> settings >> Advanced
At the bottom of the page there is the option to set your system data set pool.

After selecting my only pool I was able to start CIFs for the first time.

Hi framewrangler,

Were did you find info on the system dataset stuff?

I was reviewed every recent thread concerning cifs failing to start and also look at the fixes for each new build. Other than that it was just assembling miscellaneous threads.

Would you mind sharing some nuggets on the topic? I'd be stoked to understand what it means; system dataset and why its forcing you to pick one.

Would any one mind sharing what they know about the system dataset option under the advanced tab? No mention of it in the manual.

You should probably start a thread for the purpose of getting some attention to your question.

Setting permissions on the dataset to nobody/nobody and rebooting has always helped me resolve it.

Now that you mention it, CIFS has been acting up for me too this morning. I'm at work now and can't troubleshoot, but I'm suspicious that it has to do with upgrading from 9.2.0 to 9.2.1.2, which I did last night.
