Did this ever get identified as a root cause?

I'm experiencing the same issue since upgrading from 8.2 to 9.2.1.1 On the server the error being logged is
read_fd_with_timeout failed for client 0.0.0.0 read error = NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT.
Same issue as OP, file copies go fine for a while and then stop with a windows Access Denied

I wonder if there are some defaults/tuneables for CIFS that have changed that may cause it. ??

It sounded like he ruled out everything on the server side of the house. I'll tell you that nobody has this issue aside from you with 9.x, so I'll tell you the same thing I told the other guy.. it's probably on your workstation end. Last time we had this problem I made the same claim, and I happened to be right. I have no reason to think this is any different.
