Hi Folks!

I need an advise on how to proceed. I am on the edge of my free space and I would like to upgrade.

Option 1:
8x 8TB Sata WD Red in raid Z2 gives me 31.7 TiB usable space for 2080 euro

Option 2:
6x 10TB Sata WD red in Raid Z2 gives me 27.9 TiB usable space for 2064 euro

I have this adapter flashed to it mode. Means I can only connect up to 8 drives.

Benefit option1:
most probably faster than option 2
better ratio price/usable space

Benefit option2:
less power consumption
less noise
2 ports free

since I plan to go with esxi in the future option 2 would be great to have 2 SSDs connected to the freenas VM to use them for jails. But i am not sure how much difference in view of performance i have at the 2 options.

What option would you prefer and why?

I would get 8 8TB drives

Lots of people are using them without a problem, I've not seen many systems with 10TB drives

I suspect your mostly using a windows share with a RAIDz2 pool, either setup will be fast enough

Your calculator is different to the one I use

Have Fun
