Hi,

I would like to update my NAS with more drivespace. So I need a new board that support more ram. I would like to have a modern 1151 board in m-itx formfactor. For my raid I need 6sata ports. All boards I find that match these requirements have max 32GB Ram.

Why is this do? Did I miss something?

The recommended board is the SuperMicro X11 SSM. It's not ITX, it's Micro ATX. There are some ITX boards available from ASRock, but at this point you're just increasing the price and losing out on specs. For example, the X11 SSM can go up to 64GB RAM.

Thanks. Then I will have to buy a new case. Mini-itx would have been easier.

Why is this do?

It’s because the 1151 socket uses so much board real estate that it’s very hard to fit 4 DDR4 sockets on the board.

Smaller sockets/CPUs, like Xeon D and Atom C3000 allow up to 128GB (4x32GB)

Or you go with a MATX board like the X11SSM-F, and you get 64GB with four slots (because the 1151 processors don’t allow 32GB RDIMMs)

One of the best things I did with my FreeNAS server is giving up on the idea to build it in a small form factor case. Cramped space and a bunch of hard drives can be a troublesome combination if it comes to managing the generated heat. Since I have given up on my Silverstone SST-DS380B and bough a midi tower I had some nice benefits. First of all a much broader choise of motherboards (up to full ATX). Also, I could house more disks of which the temps stay between 29 and 34 degrees celcius (in the Silverstone I have seen temps up to 55 degrees). And I could make the server realy silent with more then sufficient over-all cooling. The silverstone was nice to see though :).
