Can't add a user with username longer than 8 characters

I am trying to get a SyncThing jail running and all was going fine until I tried to add a user to FreeNAS with username 'syncthing'.

I must be missing something obvious because the UI says usernames can be up to 16 characters, but no matter what I try it won't accept more than 8. I've tried multiple times in the UI and it won't accept it. I can add the user from the CLI, but then the user isn't available in the UI. What am I missing? FreeNAS specs in signature, using FreeNAS-11.3-U3.1.

You get a compatibility message, but it doesn't prevent you from creating the user. The Save button won't be enabled though until you configure a password.
