So i have Active directory settings set up in FreeNAS, created a share, etc. Content in this share is divided into 3 levels (share:folder:folder:files)
from a windows 7 box, i can browse to my heart's delight. but, from my 2008R2 box, i can only browse 1 level down (share:folder: list of folders). When i try to click on one of the folders i get a permissions error message after a long wait.
i checked the permissions within the shell using ls -la command....they seem consistent across all the folder levels and amongst the files.
Any ideas?

This goes past my knowledge but you need to look into the ACLs not the simple unix permissions.

Well they are used by windows but I think on the FreeNAS backend it's technically NFS ACLs. Again It's over my head.

Just to be sure:
  1. You are using the same credentials on both Win 7 and Server 2008 R2 correct?
  2. You are talking about a CIFS/SMB Share correct?
  3. What do you see as far as permissions when you right-click on the folder (from within Windows Explorer) and look at the Security Properties?
