I have finished building my first ZFS based NAS and I just installed FreeNAS 9.3 stable on it. After the first login I used the initial configuration wizard were I setup a pool named 'tank' consisting one RAID-Z2 vdev.

Under the storage\volumes tab I saw that there is a pool named 'tank' which consists of one automatically created dataset named 'tank'.

I don't like the idea of having the same name for both the pool and the dataset. Can I safely delete the automatically created dataset 'tank' and create a new dataset with another name (like 'data')?

The 2nd listing is the "main" data set name and AFAIK cannot be changed. It simply mirrors the name your volume.
Highlight your data set named Tank (listed 2nd) and you may create another data set (within that data set) named Data or any other name you wish.
