Bypass VPN on Ubuntu VM for local traffic

Hello!
I just made the fateful switch from a boring old windows based RAID 1 array on my media server to FreeNAS and so far everything is great! Bit of a learning curve but learning a lot!

I have a Ubuntu VM up and working and within it I am running uTorrent behind a VPN (NordVPN). I can ping into and log into the web gui from within my LAN for uTorrent when the VPN is off but as soon as I turn it on I can't even ping the VM from within my home network. I can ping out of the VM to other local machines as well as the gateway and have internet etc.

Searching around it looks like I need to either do something fancy with a firewall or bridge the connection. I am not sure if I can only bridge for local traffic though as if not I think all traffic would bypass the VPN.

Looking for advice on how to be able to access the VM on my local network with VPN enabled. Letting local traffic bypass the VPN only.

Thank you!
