Hey!

I would like to build a 1U 4 bay system (with 4x1TB SSD drives in RAID-5) - something like QNAP TS-431XeU. I will use it mainly for NFS/iSCSI as the storage backend for my 8x raspberry PI4 B running kubernetes.

Couple of requirements:
- needs to be quiet or with low spinning fans :)
- 2x1G is fine
- rack chassis can be 12 inches depth max
- 4GB of RAM

Can you please help and recommend CPU+motherboard+rack chassis that would be a good fit for my case?

1U and quiet will be difficult and severely limit your choices. Racks and silent are typically mutually exclusive, so that is an unusual combination.

What research have you done so far, so that we know what components can be excluded?

My HP DL360 Gen8 is pretty quiet depending on load. But no way silent...

Hey,

I will have to accept quiet then. I am already running Juniper EX switch with modded fans so that should be fine. I was thinking about Supermicro SuperServer 5019C-L with E-2100 and 2x8GB RAM.

Reedit user had this supermicro server and it seems to be loud - link. Can I drop the CPU to Intel Atom just for NFS and iSCSI?
