In Virtualbox host to guest communication is not possible in the default NAT network. Try to configure a bridged network connection.

That's exactly where I am -- and stuck. I get the message that the WebUI is available at 192.168.1.18, but there's no option to go there. How do I install the WebUI?

TrueNAS should not be virtualized under VirtualBox, it is not a supported hypervisor.

There is no option to "go there" because TrueNAS does not have a graphical desktop environment of any sort. You have to reach it over the network. Because you have installed it on VirtualBox, you are probably behind VirtualBox's NAT translation layer. As noted above, you might be able to get the networking to work if you use a bridge network for your VirtualBox network type instead. This will fix your network reachability issue but will still not render a usable TrueNAS platform for anything more than the most trite experimentation.
