I use a label maker to put the serial number on the viewable part of the drives, plus I log the locations in a spreadsheet. This takes an incredible amount of time up front (as compared to just slamming drives in), however, the time savings down the road is maybe 5x that depending on the system and the warning information generated.

When I was using Dell or HP RAID solutions with the vendor software it was trivial to turn a service light on for the machine and drive. Of course my budget paid for that--up front for the hardware, for the not-included software, and in service renewals.
It's just money out the door, and when their vendor-specific vendor-locked solutions blitched-out the system had to be rebuilt--and if things didn't "stick" exactly right then it was a system restore from backup...P.I.T.A. when that system was supposed to save me work.
With iXsystems and TrueNAS SCALE things aren't perfect, but I'm not paying out both ends either, and am money-ahead. We're not yet to the point of buying their hardware or setting up a service contract with them, but I can see how that's a completely viable solution.
