Best way to backup a FreeNAS dataset to a Proxmox server?

I have a Proxmox Box that hosts has a couple VMs.

I want to use it as a location to sync a FreeNAS dataset. The FreeNAS dataset is also backed up periodically to an external HDD.

I want to back up the dataset (about 1TB of data) to a single drive; I won't be using any raid for this.

Should I make another VM on the Proxmox Box and give it that drive?

Or should I just back it up directly to the Proxmox host itself?

If you're running ZFS on the Proxmox box, just use ZFS replication.

I'm using ZFS on the Proxmox box. Does it make sense to create another VM to do this? Or just on the Proxmox host itself?

Also, what I haven't been able to figure out is what happens if there's corruption on the single-drive side? I use RAID-Z on the main NAS, but just a single disk on the backup. If some bits get flipped on the single disk backup, and I go to restore from it, I assume I'm not protected no?
