I'm building a new FreeNAS system and I'm looking for opinions on which SATA drives are best for FreeNAS. It seems like everywhere I see opposite opinions and would like to see specifically in FreeNAS which seems to be best. I'm planning on running RAID-Z2 6-8 drives and 4GB+.

If there is already a thread about this I apologize.

Short answer: WD Red drives or Seagate NAS drives. I've a slight preference for the WD Red ones. WD Green are not bad once you've used WDIDLE3 to change the parking delay.

Long answer: search on the forum.

HGST Deskstar are popular due to Backblaze releasing their reliability reports the past few years.

I personally run WD Reds but I plan to switch to HGSTs as I begin to replace the Reds.

I like wd reds, I have 16 of them. Slower rotation speed is nice for temps and they seem to be consistent with quality.

unning RAID-Z2 6-8 drives and 4GB+.
That many drives should probably have 16GB+ of memory, not 4.

I like the WD Reds, and the WD RE4 harddrives, 16Gb of RAM is preferred......at minimum 8, preferably ECC

I'll give a vote to the Seagate NAS drives.

But really, you can't go wrong with either Seagate or WD. Understand that drives sometimes fail, and if you go into it with that mentality, and properly test/burn-in your drives, then you'll be fine.
