I'm new to nas systems in general. Is there a system that you all recommend to put Truenas on? I was looking at Synology but wonder if I am thinking correctly. Do I need to get a system that doesn't already have a OS on it? What do you guys use to build your own?

There's also

Basically, with a Synology, you're buying an underpowered box and paying for Synology's firmware. Their firmware's pretty good, the hardware is okay.

For FreeNAS, you can get stuff from the used server gear market, because many businesses refresh their servers on a 3-5 year cycle, and even ten year old Sandy Bridge gear still makes for a great FreeNAS experience. So you can get significant discounts on used gear, but you kinda need to know what you're looking at, because you can't (or shouldn't) just buy some random thing and hope for it to run FreeNAS well. And of course the NASware is free.
