Hi

Im pretty new to freenas, but i wasnt sure if i should post this in the noob section or here, but it seemed more suited for a plugins.
I found this guide http://joepaetzel.com/2014/12/10/baikal-server-your-very-own-carddav-caldav-server/ on how to install baikal on a freenas server, but im asking myself, if this is still up to date because the person of this blog doesnt seem to reply to comments on the button, so i thought maybe one of you could help me out and see if this works.

i tried install owncloud a couple times and it resulted in screwing up my freenas servr so much that nothing worked. (done it 3 times already) Now i finally got my freenas server up again and i dont feel like jumping into a new project because now i transfered 6TB of files on this NAS, but i would like to use a calDAV and contactDAV.

If i do get it running do i need to secure my freenas server or does baikal take care of that with the cert i made in the freenas, like i said im new to this i came from a synology nas (which died) and now im very much not aware. I also saw a guide in the other forum how to secure your connection to your freenas, but is that necessary for a caldav server.

the owncloud plugin is screwing up your freenas? it should install into a jail, on its own dataset and not touch the rest of your system.

personally, ive been syncing my android calendar with owncloud using caldav for a year now and it works great.

thanks for replies and thanks for the checking if it should work.

I been using baikal for the past 2 years on my synology nas and it worked great, until it died.

@Joshua Parker Ruehlig I tried following your guide on setting up owncloud, but im too much of a noob to understand everything im suppose to do, for some reason after that i wasnt able create a jail anymore. i dont believe it has to do with owncloud but last 3 times i tried installing owncloud from scratch with one of the guides it resulted in something not working anymore properly. I know it might be with me not understanding what im doing exactly and only following the guides.
I wish somebody could just tell me how to secure the owncloud plugin because i only want to use it for caldav. i only know how to use baikal because thats the only thing that worked for me.

is there any reason you don't want to do the plugin method?

because i dont know how to secure it. i also tried to use that way you showed in your thread (https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...nx-php-fpm-and-mysql.17786/page-3#post-106402) but since the plugin doesnt use nginx it doesnt work. So i tried one i google searched on how to secure it on ubuntu but that backfired.

thanks for the fast reply

can you define what you mean by "secure it"? hr plugin does ship with HTTPS enabled using a self-signed SSL certificate if that's what you were seeking.

ya thats what i meant, so its https out of the box? because the first time i installed it i activated https in the advacned settings menu and after that it never opened again.

yes its enabled by default. you don't need to enable it anywhere. just access it from the HTTPS link instead.

i have no idea what you mean by "advanced settings" for owncloud. there is an option to force HTTPS in the owncloud admin settings though.

Thanks for the clarification, ya i forced https i believe or installed a plugin of some sort and after that i wasnt able to access the webgui anymore and the jail wouldnt run anymore, thats what resulted me on searching for guides on how to install it manually, but thanks ill guess ill just install the plugin again and make a snapshot of it incase i do another fail attemp.

thanks so much for your time.

as i expected the plugin stopped working and i cant get it working anymore plus the snapshot doent help, it stopped working. i already got an error when i installed it that it cant run over https. im so frustrated...now this is going to cause another sleepless lol

i cant connect via 443 via dns the portsniffer says 443 is open, but it gave me bad request. so o tried to follow this guide http://www.stephen-scotter.net/comp...n-please-double-check-the-installation-guides
but now nothing works anymore.
i might have to give up and buy a cheap synology nas for my baikal server...

were you able to connect to owncloud at all?
over HTTP or HTTPS?
what did you do that triggered it to stop working?
can you connect to owncloud using the local IP? (try the links from the owncloud icon in the left panel of the freenas webui)

ya i was able to connect to it, via http and https, but with https i got an error ontop in the log it said i should read the htsg or something like that so i started looking for the virtual host in apache24 folder thats when i started following the guide i posted above, and after i did those, i got bad request with my xxxx.ddns.org:443 after that i thought ill redo via snapshot and after that the plugin doesnt start anymore. ill try to reinstall the plugin when i get home.

ok i got home and reinstalled the plugin again and it works now with the guide from above.
i just have one more question the log is going crazy the minute i installed the calendar and the contact apps

Code:
{"reqId":"IYWZ9J8qzbyKfqFXO4H8","remoteAddr":"","app":"PHP","message":"Undefined index: REQUEST_URI at \/usr\/pbi\/owncloud-amd64\/www\/owncloud\/apps\/contacts\/appinfo\/app.php#35","level":3,"time":"2015-09-21T14:30:00+00:00"}

this is what the output says, is this normal or does the database not have read and write privileges do i need to set the jail to group www ? i do not want to do anything stupid, but i just want to make sure it works before i start loading in my contacts and calendar data.

thanks again for the taking the time.

Those are not permission issues. Looks like non-crucial bugs to me. If you really want them resolved I'd post a bug here https://github.com/owncloud/calendar/

If that worries you, you should see my log. I got a bunch of users and a bunch of apps/encryption/previews enabled.
