So on my HP Microserver (check signature) I have a drive that's imminently going to fail.

My question is... should I go get a 10TB External and do a backup now (and get a replacement drive next month... or should I get a replacement drive this month and let the server resilver and then get the backup drive next month?

You should always backup first. Should have a backup already, every time :)

I just dont want another drive to fail mid copy... but i suppose that would be the better of the 2 evils as I would then atleast have some of my files backed up

the risk is both the same, all data has to be read for backup and also for resilvering.
if it happens during backup, you have part of your data. if it happens during resilvering, all is lost.
