I learned "the hard way" that when you try auto tune you need to give FreeNAS time to "do it's thing." After you hit the "Save" button the icon changes to a please wait rotating GIF image. I did not notice this the first time (8.3.0) and quickly went to Reboot. FreeNAS did not try to stop me. I ended up with a corrupt and unbootable system. I rebuilt from scratch with 8.3.1 using the USB technique and restored the saved config file without problems. (The USB technique creates a USB flash drive that is ready for use and does not have to be setup otherwise.) I have not found a similar posting.
Another piece of information is that the tuneables and sysctls that show are all from autotune. There are others that FreeNAS keeps hidden from view.
Also, FreeNAS failed to install from my IDE CD drive attached to a Promise 300 PCI card. It went part way through the boot process then I got an error message that the CD drive could not be found. My setup worked previously from this drive.
I hope this helps.
