When FreeNAS creates a new pool, it schedules a scrub every 36 days. Although that schedule might not be optimal (though no doubt opinions vary), at least it gets that happening with some regularity, and that schedule can be changed as appropriate to any given installation. I think it would make sense to do something similar with SMART tests--set some minimal schedule for long SMART tests (maybe every 30 days) whenever a new disk is added to a system. Thoughts?
