Hi all,

I have a very simple NAS unit, it's been running on FreeNAS .... then TrueNAS CORE solidly for years (since 2019 with this hardware!).

OS Version:TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.3.2
Product: ASRock Rack c3758d4i-4l
Model:Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU C3758 @ 2.20GHz
Memory: 96 GiB
2 (OS - Mirrored) x 512Gb SSD.
4 (DATA - ZFS Pool) x 3Tb Seagate Drives

Here's some of the Hardware inventory:

1695823586783.png

I followed the guidance (for once!) and disabled the services (just WebDAV in my case), backed-up the config and took screen shots of many things.

On 21st September (6 days ago), The I ran a Core (TrueNAS-13.0-U5.3) to Scale migration via the UI, which appeared to go well, however the system is now in a reboot loop where it's usable for about 4 minutes then reboots.

I'm not sure if an ISO clean build will resolve the issue, I've not had chance to try... but would be interested to see if anyone thinks that will make a difference.

DMESG gave me this little nugget:

Then some more:

The BIOS is the most recent available: BIOS V1.60, so I can't go newer.

I could role back to latest release of CORE, but I really want to use the additional feature Scale is offering, including Docker containers.

One slightly worrying issue came up today in the early hours, in the IPMI BIOS logs: Unrecoverable hard-disk/ATAPI/IDE device failure

Is is possible I have an incompatible BIOS setting??? If someone can give any indication where I might be able to start looking, it would be very , very much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Simon.

Its complex... a couple of suggestions:

1) retitle your forum post around the motherboard... this is not a generic SCALE issue

2) If no good advice.. go back to CORE and just check that none of these BIOS errors occur there.

Ok... so I've not had any other comments but have tried a full installs of the SCALE-22.12.3.3 via USB stick using both Legacy BIOS and UEFI options.
Both times I selected both Patriot SSD's as the installation target, along with full format and creation of Swap.

The install completes successfully but following reboot I get the following message.

1696239081490.png

If I reinstall TrueNAS-13.0-U5.3.iso using the same process, it works fine and I can restore my configuration backups and I'm back to a working server.

Has anyone got any more ideas?????

Failing that... does anyone have any suggestions for a good mini-itx board with IPMI? (given ASRock Rack board cost me £400+ !).

This is unusual. Could you try with a single boot device and see if this problem persists?

Reason for asking is that we normally only use and test with a single boot device in our labs (For extreme reliability we use 2 controllers).

After that, please report-a-bug... if no-one else can spot a problem.

Hi Cap'n Thanks for taking a look and getting back to me.

I've retried the install using the following parameters:
  • Fresh Installation of SCALE-22.12.3.3 via SANDISK CRUZER USB stick.
  • Format Disks
  • Create 16Gb swap
  • Administrative User (admin)
  • Legacy Boot (selected No)
The BIOS is configured to allow only the Patriot Drives (as per below) and the USB stick to boot.

Attempt 1: Installation to both Patriot Disks
  • SDA - Patriot Burst on SATA_9 (zfs-"boot-pool")
  • SDA - Patriot Burst on SATA_10 (zfs-"boot-pool")
  • BIOS - Configured to boot from:
    • SDA - Patriot on SATA_9
    • USB Stick
Attempt 2: Installation to single Patriot Disk
  • SDA - Patriot Burst on SATA_9 (zfs-"boot-pool")
  • BIOS - Configured to boot from:
    • SDA - Patriot on SATA_9
    • USB Stick
Attempt 3: Installation to single Patriot Disk
  • SDB - Patriot Burst on SATA_10 (zfs-"boot-pool")
  • BIOS - Configured to boot from:
    • SDA - Patriot on SATA_10
    • USB Stick
Each time I get the same end result:
1696432406929.png

What is interesting is that when I install SCALE this boot ISO generates the DMAR [Firmware Bug] show in images on the first post.
1696432821956.png
When I install CORE, the boot ISO does not get that error.

It raises the question, is there some compatibility issue in the underlying Debian OS, which does not existing in FreeBSD?

It sounds like Debian (or Linux in general) has an extra requirement.. There are other reports of the issue.
