AFP Service is inaccessible and can't stop

I started noticing I couldn't connect to my TimeMachine.

When I decided to restart the AFP service I try to toggle this button:

But just get the loading sign like this:

Nothing happens after that. I have a feeling Netatalk is misbehaving, but unsure how I would go about diagnosing this issue or what logs to post here to help.

On FreeNAS 11.2 Stable.

Much appreciated :)

Were you able to resolve this?
There was just some email from ix on netatalk/AFP and something something something.

But since I don't use it, I didn't pay attention.

Yeah now that you mention it I recall something about Apple dropping support for netatalk and AFP.

But TimeMachine relies solely on AFP which is nice :(

I'm refreshing my server with new drives / processor and cooler and might try a fresh install, but I really don't want to have to do that.

Apple has not exactly dropped support for AFP, but it is deprecated. The only place it can't be used is to share an APFS disk.

On macOS, Time Machine has supported SMB for several macOS releases. FreeNAS almost supports it, see: https://redmine.ixsystems.com/issues/23359

Interesting read.

Am i correct in saying Apple is pushing for TimeMachine over SMB.
SMB has catered for this now.
FreeNAS need to merge the SMB changes for it to work?

Kinda desperate now =/

Yes. And AFP will be removed from macOS at some point one imagines.

SMB has catered for this now.

If you meant Samba, then yes.

I'm not exactly sure what additional work they need to do, but there's been recent progress.

If you're desperate, you could try a nightly build perhaps... or maybe ping the bug in redmine.

Unfortunately not :(
Up to 11.2-U1 now and still the same
It is possible the service cannot be stopped if it is being used. Maybe a user is connected and Freenas may prevent the disconnection to take place.
