Im setting up a new nas for home use and have decided to go with freenas. previously a nas4free user, but still a bit of a newbie.

Question is, should i set the WD red hard-drives to spin down or use Advanced Power Management settings? i will have just 4 HDD creating 2 mirrored Vdevs (if ive understood it correctly). I'm not going to be using the NAS constantly, in fact 80% of the time it will be idle.

I've tried to search for the answer, I assume constantly used environment its not viable to keep spinning them down, but for home use?

Pros/cons and advise on settings please?

Generally you don't want to do that because what you save on power you lose it on drive wear plus others disadvantages.

Usually we consider the limit to be once a day, if you need to spin them up more often than that it's a bad idea.
