Adding Amanda Client to FreeNAS

OK, I have read all the manuals and tried to wrap my head around how the FreeNAS boot environments work and still don't understand how I can install the Amanda client package in a way that isn't overwritten with the next update.
Due to the fact that both /usr, /usr/local and /var/db are created from the boot environment and the data in the freenas sqlight-db, this is a lost cause, right? There is no way to extend the FreeNAS base system.

So to get something into the base system, I assume I have to supply patches and hope there is an interest from the iXsystems.

So, is there any chance of getting such a patch accepted?

The reason I would like to see the Amanda client in FreeNAS is that our backup is Amanda/Zmanda based and switching to FreeNAS for our storage servers without them working in our current backup schema or with local patches does not give anything over our current maintained NanoBSD home-brewed systems.

Really? I can't do zfs send from a nullfs and a nullfs mount is what add storage does. To do file backup when I have a dataset backup feature like zfs send is the wrong way to go.

I did a little bit of reading and didn't see anything about Amanda backup using zfs send. What are you taking about or do you have a link to something I can read?

Update:http://wiki.zmanda.com/man/amzfs-sendrecv.8.html

If you want Amanda backup, and you are trying to do zfs send/receive, then you aren't going to find a good iteration of FreeNAS to work with. As the first post made clear (and is obvious to experienced users) adding applications to FreeNAS itself is basically a no-go. That's what jails are for.

Unfortunately, jails won't let you do ZFS mounts in the same way that you can do ZFS send/receive.

So if you have a need for zfs send/receive, you are going to have to switch to FreeBSD.

What did you end up doing? Our backup solution is amanda and we recently added a freenas server. At the moment we are backing it up over NFS.

I take it by the silence that the only option is to install the amanda client in a jail. Has anyone done this recently?
