Accessing NAS folder off-site

Hi All,

I should preface this message with the fact that I am a novice when it comes to TrueNAS and have had my system setup and running for about 8 months now.

I have a folder on my NAS that I use to store music. Ideally, I would love to be able to access this folder on the fly from outside of my home network. I am looking for a resolution that would allow me to access that specific drive/folder (doesn't matter which as the whole drive is dedicated to music).

Does anyone have some guidance or pointers on how this can be achieved, but not overcomplicated.

Many thanks

Set up a VPN and access the data the same way you would at home.

Tailscale would be a good option. Or wireguard. Wireguard allows you to just send data destined for the local network through the connection.

Thank you for the advice guys. When I am looking around online, I can't seem to find any useful help for doing this on TrueNAS Core, only for scale. Do you have any pointers on how to do this kind of thing on CORE?

This would all be done on a router, not necessarily on TrueNAS.

What kind of router/gateway do you have?
To be honest I have a standard one provided by my ISP. Currently we have some TP link deco devices setup in AP mode but soon I am going to change this over to Router mode so one acts as our router, this would then allow me to setup an OVPN connection which I think would make this easier for me...
