Hello, I am planning on purchasing hardware to start my own home server as soon as i have 400 or 500$. Now what i need to know is

  • Is it possible to use SSH to install a desktop environment and use it as a remote desktop?
  • How would i go about using FreeNAS to Stream media on my server to my PC when im using an external network / a network from a different location
  • Is it possible to host a PHP / MySQL website on FreeNAS?
I'm assuming its not hard to really set the server up or anything and that i will be able to use FTP like i would use FTP on a webserver and basically just download my files or upload my files to my server through FTP as i need with secure credentials that i create in the FreeNAS administration system.

I will most likely be using my home server from external locations more. I do not want to have External hard drives i just want to take on my own project and have my own server and work on it and work on servers and such.

Thanks in advance for any help provided :)

1. Not without a lot of work - FreeNAS is made to run headless with just a web interface. If you want a desktop environment, have a look into FreeBSD or Linux.
2. There are plugins for streaming media to clients.
3. Yes, in a jail. You can find tutorials in this forum.
4. Yes, FTP works.
