Well, "everyone" know the .o2 has bugs.
LSI has released the .04 weeks ago.
iXsystems run the .04 in their systems according to cyberjock.
Plenty of users including me, run the .04.
And now Supermicro's support are giving the .04 to customers wanting it.

So whats the point of waiting for em to get their finger out when you don't have to?

But it seems, Supermicro shares different versions for the 2308...

@Jailer has another (newer) version than me... checked hash of 2308T204.ROM. See posted ReleaseNotes for the difference (NVDATA)
On asking if there is a newer version, I was pointed to the public FTP (which has 20.00.02).

Likewise, you can choose to update LSI controllers that are on Supermicro motherboards with LSI firmware equivalents, or you can simply wait for Supermicro firmware to be released. The downside to using LSI firmware is that you'll lose the ability to identify the Supermicro brand cards forever (well, without some real work to bring it back).

cyberjock, can you please clarify?

What NVRAM versions are these? I can check my own and we can compare.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to clarify. The NVDATA is something I don't have to deal with because iXsystems simply uses the LSI firmware on our hardware. Likewise my own system is addon LSI cards, so I don't have any onboard systems.

Can't you just flash back to the SM branded firmware if you need/want?

in "my" ReleaseNotes #4 of the Firmware Update History is not mentioned

"fix SATA drives poor performance issue"

can this be because of the different NVDATA versions?

Sooo. after getting online again etc, etc...

After the last time flashing with the LSI bundles, i had the following:

NVDATA: 14.01.00.06
FW: 20.00.04.00
BIOS: 07.39.00.00
UEFI: 07.27.01.00

So i re-download and reflash from LSI/Avago since the date had changed, but the versions are all the same.

Then i proceed flashing with the SP bundle that Jailer posted, and i get these versions:

NVDATA: 14.01.30.16
FW: 20.00.04.00
BIOS: 07.39.00.00
UEFI: 07.27.01.00

So everything is the same except for NVDATA. Dunno what that does... and too tired now to go looking...

I'm confused about this NVDATA thing... Since I'm using SATA drives I'm afraid of flashing the firmware SM sent me. But on the other hand I don't want to flash the firmware from Jailers post, because it's for the integrated 2308 and not the PCIe card.

Next HBA is a LSI. This "branded" stuff always makes trouble when it comes to drivers and firmware :(

Like cyberjock stated earlier in this thread: This works for iX and can work for others. But there is a little risk in breaking things.

Nevertheless, I bought a Supermicro HBA and will use their firmware. They know the hardware and so they should with the firmware. I really don't have any clue what the NVDATA is doing and why SM sent me a different firmware version for the AOC-2308L-L8E...

I will re-ask the SM support - which by the way is amazingly good - if I can use the newer NVDATA without damaging anything. Will report back

There will always be a risk involved when flashing.

As far as i know, these cards are just rebranded.

Do what you are most comfortable with. [emoji4]

It's clearly identified in this thread that people should be going to revision 20.00.04.

For the 2308 everyone there are several references made to supermicro's site. I wonder if anyone has checked the version number as it's 20.00.02.00 and from January 2015.

Just noticed a page back that there is an unofficial SuperMicro 20.00.04 version floating around. Interesting!

Well one is for an add in card and one is for the embedded controller so I'm not so surprised. How to proceed is up to you to decide.
