Which would be the 8TB drives to go to right now?
I'm considering:
  • WD80EFAX
  • ST8000VN0022
  • HDWF180UZSVA
My current pool consists of ST8000VN0002, ST8000DM002 and WD80EFZX. I have no complaints about them, but 1-3 drives per type make for a poor reliability bell curve.

I already bought one ST8000VN0022, and hooked up to a Win7 machine in a USB3 cradle, it powers down after a minute or so of inactivity (whereas other drives don't, so I assume it's the drive rather than the cradle). Would this be an issue in a FreeNAS setup?

Shuck the ezstore 8/10TB drives , you can get a 8TB red/whitelable for ~130 depending on the sale.
google around and you will find some info on it.

Shucking is another matter, right now I'm more interested in comparative reliability (and other possible issues, cfr the ST power down thing) between these three :)

Does anyone have positive/neutral/negative experiences with these three (or other 8TB) drives?

The power down thing was rather unexpected (and I don't know if this will be an issue under FreeNAS), so I 'd welcome any comments on their operations/performance/reliability :)

The last drive is for a workstation, not a NAS. I am not this matters...

As for reliability, both the Seagate and the WD have 3 year warranty. If you want reliability, you may want to pay a bit more for the enterprise editions, which have a 5 year warranty.

Then again, I have a WD Gold drive in my server, which has a 5 year warranty, and has failed. At least, once I get it out of there, I will get a replacement! Yet another reason why RAID levels were invented... :(
