For anyone who might be interested, here are the failure stats on the batch of 12 x 4TB HDDs I bought.
3 of 12 HDDs are bad on first selftest after only 1 day powered up:
2 of 5 WD
1 of 4 ST
0 of 3 HGST
One of the WD's filled up the /var/log/messages with errors and crashed the system running badlocks so that's clearly dead. The other WD and the ST are running badblocks now to see just how bad the damage is.
