I don't see any mention of the Rosewill options so I figured it might be worth posting this:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147233R

It's a 4U chassis (RSV-L4412) with 12 hot-swap bays for 3.5" or 2.5" drives. The link^ is for open-box units, which are on sale right now for $137 including shipping .

I have two of the RSV-L4412s. The only problem I've had with the chassis is the rail mounting holes. If you are going to rack it with rails you'll need to drill new holes if you want it to line up correctly as 4U.

For some reason that link didn't work for me. It gave me a 404 error.
I went to NewEgg and searched the model number. This is the link I came up with:

Do you think the Define R5 / R6 are good cases for 12 drives? Are there any towers you would recommend?

I've got 9 in an R5 and whilst you could probably add another and keep things reasonably cool (~30) I think you'd struggle with any more.

I have 13 disks in a Fractal Design R4. Puget sold additional bottom HD cage to add 3 drives and that goes in between power supply and lower cage. Evercool adds another 3x 3.5" space, so technically I could put 14x 3.5" + 2 SSDs in the R4. All drives are cool, the 3 drives in the extra cage are ~30/31 C. Over time I did add a couple case fans.

My backup server is in an ENERMAX Ostrog GT ECA3280A-BR, which is probably a better case for 12 drives.

This has 8x 3.5" + 2x 2.5" + 4x 3.5" Icy Dock. This case has the potential of 15x 3.5" with the FD 3x 3.5" cage. Advantage with this case is that you can put fans between the 2 cages, in the R4 you can't. Also this one was really cheap at $36 on sale. Drives are a little bit chilly at 21 C.

I bought a third case because it was $19.99 incl. shipping. This one should hold 12 drives as well, but I have not done anything with this yet.

Newegg does not sell any of these cases anymore, but the R5's have been on sale now due to the R6 being out.

Interesting. Can you share some pics of your R4 with 13 drives?

I decided to go with the Lian Li A76, because that seemed like an optimum case airflow wise, and potentially noise wise, with no modifications or additional drive cages necessary. Also because I was actually able to buy the case. I also bought 4 Lian Li BP3SATA backplanes.

Now I'm deciding on a PSU. Is a 750 necessary for this build, or should I go with a 650?

I also found a newegg mobo / cpu combo deal that was hard to refuse, so I went with that. x11SSH-F-O plus a 1240v5

This picture is 2 years old with the Lenovo TS-140 motherboard and 1 + 2 TB drives. The board is replaced by a Xeon-E3 and the 1 TB are replaced by 3 TB drives.
