Can another theme be added for the forums?

The narrow nav bar has been somewhat messy for a while now, but it's gotten worse with the search bar.

Edge on Windows 10 on my phone renders the nav bar the same way as Firefox (narrow in portrait and wide in landscape, the latter being fine). It's grabbing the "mobile" layout, which suppresses signatures and moves author information around in portrait orientation, while displaying exactly like the desktop version in landscape - though it's clearly a problem on desktop, too.

I wondered if something had been done with the search function. Seems to have messed with the mobile theme as the search bar has taken over the menu bar. This is on an iphone 5s using Safari.

So to find a thread with content by a particular member what would be the proper syntax?

Example in this thread where m0nkey_ said "Darn! You posted it before I did"

None of these worked
  • "darn" author:m0nkey_
  • context:"darn" author:m0nkey_
  • darn m0nkey_

On the bright side, putting animated gifs into signature blocks seems to be working rather better than I thought.
I foresee a short lived lifespan for animated gifs once everyone discovers that. ;)

Is that in landscape? If so, do you get the annoying arrows on the nav bar in portrait orientation?

There you go. Keep in mind guys there's still quite a bit left for me to do on styling this.
No good deed goes unpunished. I think you will get a lot of requests for many modifications. I'm sure you will do what you can, when you can. I appreciate the work on the forum in the first place.

Yep, try and do one little thing nice and we will work you as hard as we can, LOL. But seriously thank you very much for the work. I would be surprised at this point if most if not all the active people here have not already switched over.

Maybe when I am out in California I can buy someone a beer as my show of gratitude. Probably end up out at Buffalo Bill's in Hayward at some point... My father loves that place.

Sweet baby Jesus! My eyes are saved!!! @JoshDW19 be praised!!!!!

Thanks so much for all the progress so far. I'll echo @joeschmuck with "No good deed goes unpunished." So, let's go ahead and get to it ;)

Some "bugs" I've noticed. Forgive me if you already are aware of these:
  • When you click the drop down on the buttons on the top, they go from being flat, square corner buttons to gradiented, round corner buttons in a different shade of blue.
  • For the buttons on top, the font size changes on click, which causes the buttons to resize inappropriately.
  • On the index page, the user picture on the right side is oversized for the box (not sure if intentional or not).
  • The line "Discussion in 'thread' started by user, date." at the top of each thread is very low contrast for the thread, user, and date links with the new gray background.
  • The "Post Reply", "Upload File", and "More Options..." buttons at the bottom of the reply are inconsistent with the page buttons (not sure if intentional or not).
On a more pedant-y note, the stoplight colors for "Forum Rules", "Documentation", and "Report a Bug" labels seem really weird to me. I like that they stand out from the other labels, but at the very least I'd expect "Report a Bug" to be red, since bugs are bad. And we want people to read the forum rules, so that should be "a go", if you know what I mean. Also, the shades of red/yellow/red don't really go with the blue in the rest of the forum.

Again, please don't take this as criticism of your work. I'm thrilled with what I'm seeing (you fixed the messages: message count bug!!!), so I'm just trying to be another set of helpful eyes.

I think we're at a point where a more formal solution for reporting forum issues is warranted, at least to keep track of what is already on the to-do list and what isn't.

Would it be appropriate to add a "forum" category to the FreeNAS bug tracker? Another, simpler alternative, perhaps?

I can *fix* that for you (evil glint in eyes)
I feel like it is one of those evil genie tricks. If I say "yes, please do" you're going to poke me in the eyes or something then say alright now you can't see it anymore. Hence I will prefer to see that than be blind altogether. :)

Things that should be fixed so far on "New Theme":

Added an identifiable div container and text to the search box
Made search box responsive
Fixed signature spacing
Fixed resource section permissions for all users
Added @media query to fix the navigation bar getting shoved under the blue sub-menu bar on mobile devices
Very basic theming of search results landing page - not happy with the way it looks, but I need more time to divide the CSS tags
Adjust font sizes on blue sub-menu bar to the size of the "default" forum theme

I may have missed a few things, but I think that covers a lot of the major things you all were looking for. I'll start working on it again after the weekend (maybe during the weekend if I get bored!). Enjoy the long weekend everyone!

And the search it was replaced with is virtually useless for those of us who knew how to make use of the old search. I shouldn't have to go to one of my web servers and pull referer logs to find old threads I've posted ${something} in.
